Diane Smith

At 58, Diane Smith is living a fulfilling and independent life with the support of Volunteers of America’s Northern Virginia Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) program. Despite living with a mild intellectual disability and anxiety disorder, Diane’s warmth and generous spirit have made her an integral part of her community.

As the eldest of three siblings, Diane has always valued family and connection. Though her mother still resides in Virginia and her father in California, Diane has built a new family among her housemates and the VOA team.

Her journey with VOA began in 2000 when her mother encouraged her to explore group living for greater stability and support. That decision changed everything.

My mom wanted me to be in a group home. And I love it. It’s really cool to have other people to live with and talk to” – Diane

Beyond her home life, Diane is passionate about giving back. She fondly remembers volunteering for VOA’s Operation Backpack®, helping to provide school supplies to children in need.

I love helping out in the community. Giving back means a lot to me” – Diane

Her days are filled with meaningful activities. She enjoys shopping, attending church on Sundays, and treating herself to smoothies with friends. Some of her favorite memories include visiting Virginia Beach and taking part in annual lunch cruises, which bring her great joy.

While Diane has always been independent, she now requires a bit more support with mobility as she ages, especially when walking on inclines or declines. However, with VOA by her side, she continues to enjoy life on her terms.

For Diane, her housemates have become more than just roommates—they’re lifelong friends. Together, they share meals, laughter, and companionship, creating a home filled with warmth and connection.

Thanks to VOA’s support, Diane is living a full, vibrant, and meaningful life, surrounded by a community that values her independence, contributions, and boundless spirit.
