Marian D. Clifton

Marian D. Clifton, M.A., CWDP is a Presidential Fellow for Southeast Initiatives and an Assistant Professor in Human Services at Virginia Peninsula Community College. She is a passionate educator, motivator, and encourager, as well as a victorious survivor of domestic violence. Professor Clifton is a founding board member of Menchville House, a transitional home for families, and has served as the Executive Consultant for Natasha House, a refuge for women in transition. She frequently speaks on topics related to survival, empowerment, and women navigating life transitions.

A lover of poetry, Professor Clifton has shared her work on national platforms. Her academic journey includes earning a Bachelor of Science in Sociology/Criminal Justice from Old Dominion University and a Master of Arts in Counseling from Hampton University. She has also completed coursework in the American Studies doctorate program at the College of William and Mary and is currently a doctoral candidate at Trevecca Nazarene University. Additionally, she has completed the Harvard University School of Divinity Leadership Institute.

A veteran in higher education administration, Professor Clifton is a Certified Workforce Development Professional (CWDP) who holds certifications as a Federal Career Counselor and Federal Job Search Trainer. She has extensive expertise in military spouse education and career programs, having served as a national program manager of counselors for the Department of Defense.

Beyond her academic roles, Professor Clifton contributes to various community initiatives and specializes in nonprofit organizational development, proposal writing, group facilitation, and workforce development. Her dedication to empowering individuals and fostering opportunities for growth continues to inspire her students and the broader community.
