Darrin Mitchell

Vice President of Maryland

As the Vice President of Maryland for Volunteers of America Chesapeake & Carolinas, Darrin Mitchell is responsible for the overall strategic, operational, and clinical responsibility for all programs in Maryland for behavioral health, homeless services, supportive housing and community re-entry.

As part of the executive leadership team, Mitchell focuses on program leadership and management, financial management, external relationships, and knowledge management for the territory of Maryland. He brings over 20 years of experience in behavioral health and primary healthcare operations, including work in the re-entry field.

Mitchell began his career as a therapist, providing individual and group counseling in both private practice and nonprofit community settings. His work focused on stress management, substance use, and domestic violence prevention. Over time, Mitchell witnessed the challenges that both patients and providers faced, which prompted him to shift his focus toward improving healthcare systems on a larger scale.

Mitchell transitioned into healthcare leadership as the Regional Director of Operations at Centurion Health, where he managed behavioral health operations across 15 healthcare sites. He then became the Executive Director of The Mental Health Center, a nonprofit behavioral health organization, where he expanded programs and enhanced service quality. Following this, he took on leadership roles in primary healthcare, first as the Regional Director of Operations at Wellpath and later as the Associate Vice President of Operations at YesCare, overseeing multi-site healthcare services across the Mid-Atlantic region. Most recently, he served as the Vice President of Operations at PsychoGeriatric Services, where he led initiatives aimed at improving behavioral healthcare delivery, patient outcomes, and organizational growth.

In addition to his leadership roles, Mitchell has worked as a consultant and subject matter expert, assisting community practices, private equity groups, for-profit healthcare companies, and healthcare IT organizations in streamlining operations, enhancing provider efficiency, and optimizing service delivery. His experience in both direct patient care and large-scale healthcare management has enabled him to help organizations refine processes, implement best practices, and develop sustainable, patient-centered solutions.

Darrin holds a Master of Science in Counseling from Troy University and is certified in Lean Six Sigma, providing him with a solid foundation in process improvement and operational strategy.

Outside of work, Darrin enjoys spending time with his wife and two sons. He has a passion for horticulture and woodworking and loves exploring new places, reading, and mentoring others.
