Dr. Brooke Covington

Dr. Brooke Covington is an Assistant Professor of English at Christopher Newport University, where she also serves as the Academic Director of the university’s Center for Community Engagement. In this role, Dr. Covington strives to integrate community-engaged learning into the curriculum, fostering deep, reciprocal, and sustainable partnerships between community organizations, faculty, and students.

She is the co-founder and co-director of the Tidewater Community Writing Center, a free resource providing writing support for local writers of all backgrounds and skill levels. Dr. Covington holds a Ph.D. in Rhetoric & Writing from Virginia Tech, and her research focuses on rhetorics of public memory, anti-oppressive community engagement, and narrative medicine.

Her scholarship has been featured in leading journals, including the Community Literacy Journal, Journal of Medical Humanities, Western Journal of Communication, and Journal of Curriculum and Pedagogy. Dr. Covington is dedicated to advancing community literacy and meaningful connections between academic institutions and the communities they serve.
