1st Annual Stand Down

On November 7, 2014 Volunteers of America Chesapeake will be hosting its 1st Annual Veteran’s Stand Down to help aid in the combat of the increasing number of homeless female veterans in the Greater Baltimore Metropolitan area. This one day event will provide services to homeless veterans and those at risk of becoming homeless.

Stand Down was a term originally used during the Vietnam War to describe a safe retreat for units returning from combat. The first ever Stand Down was organized in San Diego in 1988 by a group of Vietnam Veterans. Since then Stand Downs have been an effective way reaching homeless Veterans and providing them with valuable information to help get them back on their feet. Services such as housing, employment, medical and dental care, substance abuse care, mental health counseling, hot meals, benefits and resources are provided to Veterans at a Stand Down.
